Nebraska State Bar Association is a 9,300 member 501(c) nonprofit professional association of lawyers and judges dedicated to improving the administrat! ion of justice. Founded as a voluntary Bar in 1899, the NSBA was integrated by order of the Nebraska Supreme Court in 1937 and today is one of 40 mandatory bar associations in the U.S. The Association has an annual budget of $3.5MM and a staff of 18. The Association provides a variety of programs and services to members including: printed and online publications including Nebraska Lawyer Magazine, newsletters, member directory; CLE programs and resources; Casemaker, an online library of state and federal laws and opinions; and affinity programs and services.
The NSBAâ s Executive Director, Jane Schoenike, has been with the organization for over 17 years and plans to retire in the Fall 2013. The organization has formed a Search Committee to embark on a national search to recruit her successor. More information on the NSBA can be found on its website: www.nebar.com Executive Director reports to the 12-member Executive Council of the 96-member House of Delegates and ! is designated as NSBAâ s Secretary/Treasurer. This executive ! also has appointments by the Supreme Court to serve as Director of Admissions to the State bar, as well as other commissions and committees.
In addition to NSBA staff and volunteers, other important interactions and working relationships include: NSBA members; officials in federal, state and local government roles; outside financial advisers, consultants and lobbyists; executives at other bar associations in Nebraska and nationally; the public at large; members of the media. This person is the top paid administrative executive, responsible for the overall management of NSBA and all affiliates including the achievement of short and long term objectives. The Executive Director will oversee all Association activities including administrative, fiscal and human resource management, government, judicial and public relations, admissions, membership development, programs and services and organizational growth. Further, the Executive Director may be called upon to serve as ! a spokesperson for the NSBA and is expected to provide leadership and direction that creates a high level of enthusiasm, expectancy and momentum among the volunteer leaders, NSBA staff and the membership.Outstanding opportunity for a committed association or other executive to lead a professional association with a long history of success.
An experienced staff and committed volunteers ensure the historical integrity of the organization and a strong foundation for the NSBA going forward. At the same time, the organization faces a unique challenge with ongoing litigation challenging the mandatory membership requirement of a unified bar structure. This presents a level of uncertainty amongst the staff and volunteer leadership that needs to be recognized. The new Executive Director will need to embrace some level of uncertainty, yet remain steadfast in his/her optimism and be prepared to lead the organization forward and continue to provide outstanding services and pro! grams.
