Apprentice Engineer

Location: Omaha, Nebraska

Incumbent works under the direction of a Licensed Facility Engineer, operating and maintaining heating, electrical, air conditioning, and other building systems. Incumbent will receive on-the-job training and classroom instruction necessary to become a Licensed Facility Engineer within 15 months.

Essential Functions:
Perform a variety of duties in order to maintain the operation of critical building systems (e.g., boilers, air conditioning, appliances, etc.) under the supervision of a Licensed Facility Engineer in accordance with established policies and procedures

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the general public.

Perform daily inspection of boilers, pipelines and operating equipment for steam, water, air or fuel leaks or defective parts according to current Preventive Maintenance Program.

Perform needed tests on boiler and associated equipment, recording test instrument readings and other information to ensure continuous operation.

Inspect plumbing and pipe fittings for leaks and repairs as necessary.

Report any major equipment failure to Chief Engineer in a timely manner.

Perform minor repairs, such as replacing worn gaskets, valves, tightening joints and replacing defective meters and painting pipes, gas lines and boilers.

Requisition, parts and supplies needed to make minor/routine repairs to equipment.

Regularly clean boilers, boiler tubes, boiler stacks, and other equipment as directed.

Assist in major repairs to boiler and other equipment as directed.

May perform repairs on other small equipment (e.g. appliances, lawn mowers, snow blowers, hand tools, etc.) necessary for the maintenance of assigned building.

Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.

Perform other duties as directed and assigned.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required.

Must obtain a Third Grade Engineer Certificate within 15 months of hire.

Supplemental training in plumbing, electrical, or HVAC preferred.

Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions that include adverse weather conditions, extreme temperatures, vibration, dust, fumes, mechanical/electrical hazards, as well as chemicals and biohazards. Incumbents will wear personal protective equipment while performing certain duties. Noise level is usually moderate and occasionally loud. Work is generally performed during standard day-shift hours during training, however hours will include varied days, hours and overtime as needed. Work may be stressful when dealing with multiple priorities and time constraints. Incumbents may encounter uncooperative or irate persons while performing duties.

Work requires physical activity including extended periods of walking and standing with occasional climbing, reaching, carrying, balancing, kneeling, crouching and bending. An incumbent must have the agility, balance and strength to maneuver around various obstacles and to access all areas of a building. An incumbent must have the ability to frequently lift and/or carry equipment, tools, and other materials weighing up to 80 pounds and to occasionally up to 100 pounds. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.

Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges.
